European Congress of Radiology (ECR)
The ECR is the annual meeting of the European Society of Radiology (ESR) and is one of the largest medical congresses in the world, attracting more than 25,000 congress participants. With 300 companies exhibiting across more than 26,000m², its exhibition is also one of the largest medical exhibitions in Europe.
ECR 2018 will take place in Vienna from February 28 to March 4, 2018 under the leadership of ESR President Prof. Bernd Hamm from Berlin, Germany. The congress motto, chosen by the president, is ‘Diverse & United’ and the ESR is very much looking forward to seeing ECR 2018 unite radiologists to show the diversity of the discipline.
“Radiology is such a diverse specialty, ranging from more and more refined diagnostic options to image-guided minimally invasive treatment options. Our specialty has something to offer for all of us and also for future generations of physicians, radiographers and students. However, like in a mosaic, it is the connection of all the pieces that create the big picture. By using this metaphor I wish to express my sincere wish and hope that, despite these different and interesting facets and subspecialties, radiologists should see themselves as a community and join forces to strengthen our specialty in the best interest of our patients”, said Hamm, sending out an invitation to all members of the radiological community.
Current hot topics in radiology such as big data, artificial intelligence, hybrid imaging, interventional imaging, and radiomics will be major points of focus at ECR 2018.
In June 2016 a new pneumatic tube system and a new laboratory street have been installed at SMZ Süd - Kaiser - Franz - Josef - Hospital in Vienna. Why is it unique? It is the world's first fully automated direct transfer of blood samples to a laboratory road using a pneumatic tube system.
An increase in the amount of patients, complete documentation requirements and legal changes are putting the hospital system under more pressure to reform. Achieving a high patient satisfaction, using hospital staff optimally and working as efficiently as possible, are daily challenges for many hospital managers.
Blood labs play a special role here. In 90% of cases, their results form the basis for any further treatment in hospitals. A shorter waiting period between blood collection and laboratory results contributes significantly to an increase of patient satisfaction.
The usage of laboratory roads is nothing new. Usually, the blood samples are transported to the blood laboratory via a courier service or pneumatic tube system and manually filled into the laboratory road by an employee.
Process optimization with minimal adaptation effort
Now Sumetzberger has ensured that the automation of laboratories can be pushed into new dimensions. "In close collaboration with our partners and the Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Hospital, we have created the missing link between pneumatic tube systems and laboratory roads. “For the first time, this allows a direct transfer of blood samples to blood analysis without the need for manual labor and with minimal adaptation effort, "explains Josef Gebhard, Export Manager at Sumetzberger GmbH. "This reduces the waiting time on laboratory results to less than one hour, depending on the analysis. Also, the automation of routine analysis can be used to shift personnel resources, such as innovative laboratory analytical technologies in patient care or research. "
Close collaboration for optimized processes
The quality and safety of blood samples are the main focus. In addition to the shock-free transfer of the blood samples from pneumatic tube systems to laboratory roads, the requirements catalog included an emergency exit as well as the possibility of temporary storage. The patented AutoUnload carrier is equipped with specially developed carrier inserts.
In June 2016, Sumetzberger started an evaluation procedure according to a guideline from Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Hospital for blood indicators such as H-Index, LD and potassium. Since then about a million blood samples have been analyzed more quickly and efficiently.
Individual solution for every hospital
Mr. Josef Gebhard concludes: "The realization of individual customer requirements has a high priority in the planning phase of effective pneumatic tube systems and automation technology. The demand for automated processes in patient care is becoming very important. Worldwide, we have developed and installed pneumatic tube systems in more than 1000 hospitals. Together with our local partners it is always important for us to develop our technology, so that our pneumatic tube systems can easily be adapted to new challenges with minimal effort. With our solution of direct transfer to laboratory roads, we were once again able to achieve this goal successfully." In 2018, the next fully-automated laboratories will be put into operation at the Aarhus University Hospital, Denmark, and the SMZ-Ost Hospital, Vienna.

New claim, familiar values: People.Health.Care.
With immediate effect, the internationally operating manufacturer of medical devices Lohmann & Rauscher (L&R) is presenting itself with a new claim, which describes the main areas of focus for the company in a nutshell: People.Health.Care. The claim is designed to condense the corporate approach of L&R and communicate it in an emotional manner and also to help in branding.
As a solution provider and reliable partner in the fields of medicine, nursing care and hygiene, L&R has three focal areas at the core of its day-to-day work: people, their health and care for both. From now on, these focal areas are being taken into account in the new claim “People.Health.Care.”, which reflects the corporate approach of the medical device supplier and communicates it in an emotional manner.
“The claim is not only formally closely linked to the L&R brand – first and foremost it is designed to bring together the content of our focal areas of business and thereby help in branding. That is why our positioning with the claim is an important component of our internal and external marketing activities, especially in view of the increasing internationalisation of the company,” says Wolfgang Süßle, CEO of the L&R Corporate Group.
Even though the three areas are deliberately separated by a full stop and are distinct, together they form a whole and in essence stand jointly for the vision and values of L&R as a solution and service provider: quality, expertise, customer focus, confidence, innovation and reliability.
People. Focus on people.
People are at the focus for L&R and that is why they come first in the claim. With its claim, L&R is directing its attention at customers, users and patients on the one hand and partners and employees on the other and is putting them at the centre of its activity.
Health. Sphere of activity and expertise.
Health defines both a basic human need and the vision and brand values of L&R. The claim is therefore not only a clear commitment to health in general, but at the same time the promise to provide products and concepts that help people throughout the world.
Care. Reliable partner and solution provider.
As a caring solution provider, L&R is incorporating the brand values of confidence, customer focus and service orientation in the new claim and is positioning itself as a reliable partner of customers, employees, users and patients.
