Interview with Jeff Gui

General Manager - Middle East and Africa
Mindray

Briefly introduce your company, business journey and main achievements.

Mindray is one of the leading global providers of medical devices and solutions. We are dedicated to innovation in the fields of patient monitoring and life support, in-vitro diagnostics, medical imaging, and orthopaedics, amongst others. Mindray possesses a sound global R&D, marketing, and service network.

Inspired by our customers’ needs, we adopt advanced technologies and transform them into accessible innovations that bring healthcare within reach. After 30 years of development, our products and services are serving healthcare facilities in over 190 countries and regions. Today, we have more than 50 subsidiaries overseas, with over 14,000 employees from all over the world.

Based on your observation, what are some of the key health challenges faced in the region and what solutions are your company bringing to tackle them?

Based on factual data from the World Health Organization (WHO) and my experience in the continent in these past years, Africa has been confronted with problems in inadequate medical resources that include not only medical products but also health workforce and advanced medical technologies. To tackle these challenges, medical equipment companies in the region should hold a bigger picture, taking comprehensive consideration of providing high-quality products and empowering the local healthcare system.

We firmly adhere to our mission to advance medical technologies to make healthcare more accessible. Driven by our mission, we provide holistic medical solutions, from high-end products to mid and low-end products, which adapt to almost all kinds of clients’ needs.

Besides, we are deeply aware of the necessity of helping cultivate talents in the medical field in Africa. For example, we have established 16 ultrasound schools to provide a full range of training services for medical professionals. In Egypt, more than 1,500 obstetricians and gynaecologists have completed their training courses and joined the medical field. In addition, we are also actively involved in building platforms of academic exchange between African medical engineers and experts from other countries.

We are much honoured to contribute and shoulder such a responsibility to improve the accessibility and quality of healthcare in Africa.

Africa Health is a one-stop destination for the region’s booming healthcare industry. What products will your company show and highlight at the exhibition this year?

While Mindray will not be at Africa Health onsite this year, we will have a great online showcase where we will display our latest innovative products of different product lines, including BeneVision N22 Patient Monitor, CAL 8000 Cellular Analysis Line, Nuewa I9 Diagnostic Ultrasound System, etc. For audiences of Africa Health, they can explore many details about our latest products and solutions via our online showcase: https://www.mindray.com/en/events/africa-health

As the healthcare industry continues to develop, please tell us where your company is headed in terms of technology and innovation in the future.

At Mindray, R&D is the ultimate driver of our business. We have insisted on investing about 10 per cent of our total revenue per year in R&D based on 20 per cent income growth every year. Now we have built up a sound global R&D network with 10 research centres and over 3,400 R&D experts across the globe.

We are stepping out of our comfort zone and gradually entering the deep end of innovations to make breakthroughs in advanced medical technologies. We also encourage the business convergence of different business units and take full advantage of our comprehensive product lines to build our unique ecosystem that covers inter-hospitals and across hospitals.

Meanwhile, we always actively organise and participate in external cooperation with top hospitals, universities, researchers, competitors, and upstream supply chains, to learn from each other and to inspire more and more innovations.

What do you think is the direction of the medical industry that deserves special attention in recent years?

In recent years, "Smart Healthcare" has gotten more and more attention in the world. In my opinion, it is a valuable trend and signals a bright future for medical companies. Mindray is exploring along this way, and we have prepared to make more self-breakthroughs.

Take Mindray M-Connect IT solution as an example. Compared to traditional medical products for critical care, Mindray M-Connect IT Solution builds a safer hospital environment. It provides a universal, central monitoring platform that seamlessly integrates medical devices by using a standard interface to connect with a third-party information system. It can optimise clinical workflow, improve work efficiency, and help clinicians manage numerous challenges each day, saving time, and in turn, saving lives. Currently, Mindray has developed different IT solutions for different business units — from M-Connect IT solutions for Patient Monitoring and Life Support, and Laboratory IT Solutions for In-Vitro Diagnostics, to MiCo+ Medical Imaging IT Solutions for Medical Imaging.

Of course, this is just the beginning. We believe we could achieve more with persistent innovations.

What are Mindray’s main business goals in the future?

We are striving to become one of the top 20 medical equipment providers in the world by 2025. We believe our engineering capability, insights into our customer’s demands, as well as sound R&D and manufacturing capability, constitute the core competitiveness of Mindray and also shape our unique path to the world's leading medical companies.

To achieve this goal, we are pulling out all the stops to produce more advanced products and provide better services for our clients all over the world. At the same time, we keep exploring and cultivating new business, taking advantage of means of merger and acquisition of leading upstream enterprises, to empower our present R&D capacity.

Besides, as an important player in the global healthcare industry, we insist on upholding the concept of sustainability, deepening, and broadening our collaboration, and strengthening the integration of corporate strategy and social responsibility to keep up with the development of the times and the needs of the industry. From responding to health crises to sharing medical technologies, from committing to communities to promoting public emergency treatment, we will endeavour the greatest effort in sustainable medical care and contribute to human health.
