A Healthcare Provider's Guide to Reporting Healthcare Challenges: Principles, Tools & Strategies

OVERVIEW

The Voice Project is an initiative of the Rural Health Advocacy Project. It aims to educate and inform HCWs from all levels of the private & public health system on how to identify, solve and report health system challenges in a manner that is ethical, strategic and within the applicable policy frameworks. The overall goal of The Voice Project is to increase the active engagement of HCWs in addressing health system challenges by taking strategic and effective steps that contribute to a strengthened, equitable health system for all.

  • What is advocacy and the different roles of healthcare providers
  • The Constitutional mandate for healthcare worker advocacy
  • Using internal and external mechanisms to report healthcare issues and raising concerns to improve health standards
  • The Protected Disclosures Act - what am I protected against

OUTCOMES

After attending this workshop, HCWs will

  • become knowledgeable on how to use existing structures to report healthcare challenges and failures
  • be willing and able to challenge the status quo and speak out about health system failures; problem solve challenges; advance patient-centred solutions; and serve as leaders and influencers to colleagues
  • become advocacy-competent and put their patients first

Each group is given a case study, and identifies what possible advocacy strategies could have been applied or were applied. The use of a case study allows for greater input from participants, put the spotlight on healthcare workers applying advocacy and thereby interrogate strategies and principles discussed in the theory part of the Voice workshop
