Sustainability in Healthcare

(2 Clinical Points)

The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines a Sustainable Healthcare System as a system that improves, maintains or restores health, while minimizing negative impacts on the environment and leveraging opportunities to restore and improve it, to the benefit of the health and well-being of current and future generations. This is the goal for every country the world over and each one is slowly identifying how to uniquely achieve these goals in their own way and African countries are no exception.

There is no doubt that the inadequacies within the African healthcare sector have been a critical area of concern for a long time, far preceding the global health crisis. The COVID-19 pandemic has further exposed weaknesses in African economies in managing emergency health hazards and exponentially accentuated various healthcare deficiencies — from lack of medical supplies and care facilities, to inequalities in the delivery of quality healthcare services. This all begs the question – does the pandemic provide Africa with an opportunity to decide what African sustainable healthcare looks like and how it can be achieved?
