Council for Health Service Accreditation of Southern Africa (COHSASA)
The core mission of the Council for Health Service Accreditation of Southern Africa NPC (COHSASA), a non-profit company in Cape Town, is to help healthcare facilities deliver better and safer care to its patients. It does this by assisting hospital, clinics, day surgeries, hospices and sub-acute establishments to use quality improvement methods, internationally accredited standards and a web-based quality information system, CoQIS II to monitor progress. In the past 27 years of operation, COHSASA has worked with healthcare facilities in both the public and private sectors in 16 African countries. There is a strong focus on building capacity.
The COHSASA programme helps healthcare professionals to measure their services against standards. This approach teaches healthcare workers how to monitor improvements themselves and establish ownership of quality and patient safety initiatives. COHSASA has achieved global recognition and is the only sub-Saharan health facility accrediting body accredited by the International Society for Quality in Health Care External Evaluation Association (ISQuaEEA). Since it achieved its first accreditation award from ISQua in 2002, the Council has maintained its accredited status with five further accreditations. Its current accreditation status is valid until December 2023.
