New Vice President and Market Leader for Philips Africa

JJ van Dongen was appointed as Vice President and Market Leader of Philips Africa in August 2011 making him responsible for the overall Philips operations and business development across the African continent. Prior to this Mr. Van Dongen was already the Country CEO for Philips South Africa since October 2008, a position that he continues to hold in addition to his new responsibilities.

Alongside his role as the CEO for Philips South Africa, Mr. Van Dongen was also the General Manager and head of Philips Healthcare in Africa, overseeing the Healthcare business across Africa and Israel since February 2009.

Mr. Van Dongen, born in South Africa in 1962, is qualified in the area of Nuclear Science having worked with the former Atomic Energy Corporation of South Africa prior to joining the healthcare industry. His background in physics and mathematics has allowed him a strong understanding of the use of technology in hospitals of both the private and government sectors.

He joined Philips in 2002 when his previous company, Marconi Medical Systems, was acquired as part of the growth of Philips Healthcare. From 2002 to 2003, Mr. Van Dongen was Sales and Marketing Director for Philips Healthcare South Africa.  In early 2004 he commenced as Managing Director for this same business. In 2006 he took on an additional role including the managing of the Sub Sahara Philips Healthcare operation.

“My priorities, in a region facing ongoing challenges, are to identify growth opportunities and boost Philips’ commitment to develop relevant and sustainable solutions for Africa,” said Mr. Van Dongen. “Building-up and maintaining strong relations with government and business groups is essential. Philips’ presence in Africa has grown in recent years. As many developed countries are struggling to stimulate economic growth, a strong middle class of 313 million, or 34% of the African population, is on the rise. This growing middle class is creating demand for Philips solutions in healthcare, lighting and consumer lifestyle. Through our emphasis on improving people’s lives and our strong focus on providing relevant and sustainable solutions, we are convinced that we are well-positioned to further grow our presence on this continent. I am committed to providing strong leadership through the empowerment of the management team throughout Africa.”
