9.55 Opening Remarks from the Chairman

Dr. Darian van Loggerenberg, Head: Private Practice Department, South African Medical Association, RSA
10.00

Opening Keynote

A Doctor’s Perspective

What role does a Doctor play in an ever changing healthcare industry where technology is as integrated to his diagnosis, treatment and post operative care as he is to the patient? Does he sit on the side lines as he always has or can he be at the forefront of this massive transition? At the end of the day, the Doctor and Patient have a unique relationship which even technology cannot facilitate.

Dr. Darian van Loggerenberg, Head: Private Practice Department, South African Medical Association, RSA

10.30 Benefits of Remote Monitoring in Chronic care

Africa’s epidemics have taken the attention away from chronic care. Decision makers sit on the fence debating if they should address the dying or those in need of long term managed care. Perhaps Africa has found the solution to both via the use of mobile technology in healthcare.

Peter Malebye, General Manager: Innovation and Marketing, MTN, RSA

Who Sets the Tone for mHealth Africa?

Stakeholders have often taken a back seat in leading this innovative industry. Regulators, Insurance, Physicians and Healthcare Providers have always adopted to demographic and calamity change. This is an opportunity for them to avert risk and chart a strategy in implementing fragmented solutions within the wide mHealth space which they can begin today!

  • Dr. Darian van Loggerenberg, Head: Private Practice Department, South African Medical Association, RSA
  • Dr Marmol Stoltz, Chair of SAMA's General Practitioners Private Practice Committee and Member of the Executive Committee of SAMA
  • Dr Colin Fincham , Project Director – Wareed National Implementation - UAE
13.00 LUNCH

Is e-Prescription a workable solution?

It is most debated and least implemented; perhaps this may be the right moment to move forward and set the rules. An integral component of the EHR/EMR solution, without a consensus the industry cannot really move forward

Dr Marmol Stoltz, Chair of SAMA's General Practitioners Private Practice Committee and Member of the Executive Committee of SAMA

Mobile health gains a lot of momentum but does not steal the limelight because it does not involve physicians, its core drivers. In 2012, we focus on a gathering of physicians in debate and discussion on practical models for Africa, integrating stakeholders in synergy to drive monitoring and management of disease via remote care and lifestyle changes. We will conclude with options for interoperability in a hybrid environment to decide standards in connected health and chart a stakeholders action plan.
